Awards, Fontaine Society 2020-21 Predoctoral Fellowships for Excellence through Diversity

Congratulations to recipients of the 2020-21 Penn Predoctoral Fellowship for Excellence through Diversity! 

Photos of Kiana Murphy and German Pallares with textThe Office of the Provost Penn Predoctoral Fellowships for Excellence through Diversity provide support for doctoral students in the humanities or social sciences, enrolled in a graduate or professional doctoral program at Penn, as they complete their dissertations. The fellowships are intended to support scholars-- who are not eligible for additional funding through their departments or schools-- from a wide range of backgrounds, who can contribute to the diversity of Penn and the broader higher education community. 

Penn's 2020-21 Predoctoral Fellows are: 

  • Kiana Murphy
    PhD candidate in English, School of Arts & Sciences 
    Dissertation: Speculative Black Girl Ethics: Reading Practices, Visual Culture, and the Urgency of the Present
     
  • German Pallares
    PhD candidate in Architecture, Weitzman School of Design
    Dissertation: Life on the Border: Constructing the México/U.S. Borderland, 1961-1971

As Penn Predoctoral Fellows, these students will receive support for the final stages of dissertation research and writing, as well as a generous stipend, research and travel fund, and professional development opportunities throughout the year.
