Víctor R. Vázquez Marrero is pursuing his Ph.D. in Immunology at the Perelman School of Medicine. He graduated with a B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Puerto Rico de Río Piedras (UPR-RP) and was dedicated to research and outreach. He spent 3 years conducting research at UPR-RP and studied infectious diseases for 3 summers. As a first-generation Latino and a member of the LGBT+ community, he has participated in numerous outreach activities such as Creando ConCiencia, Skype a Scientist, Upward Bound Program, and a mentorship program for LGBT+ students to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within science. Recently, he was awarded the 2020 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. After completion of his studies, Vázquez Marrero aims to return to Puerto Rico and become a tenure-track Professor who will conduct research on the immune response to infections, provide opportunities for students to explore science, and educate the public.
