Awards, Fontaine Society, Perelman School of Medicine Three Penn doctoral students receive HHMI Gilliam Fellowships

Congratulations to the latest Penn graduate students to be recognized by the HHMI Gilliam Fellowship! 

Illustration of science equipment, HHMI logo, and headshots of three student recipientsThree Penn doctoral students and their advisors have been selected to receive the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's 2020 Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study. HHMI created the Gilliam program in 2004 in honor of the late James H. Gilliam, Jr., a charter trustee of HHMI who spent his life nurturing excellence and diversity in science and education. The Gilliam program recognizes and supports pairs of students and their dissertation advisers who are selected for their scientific leadership and commitment to advance diversity and inclusion in the sciences.

Each adviser-student pair will receive an annual award totaling $50,000, for up to three years. Advisers will participate in a year of mentor training, where they’ll learn about cultural identities and how to listen and engage across cultures. And fellows will be invited to attend the annual Gilliam meeting and scientific meetings at HHMI headquarters.

Penn’s HHMI Gilliam Fellowship recipients are:

  • Ryan Daniels, PhD candidate in Cell and Molecular Biology (PSOM)
    Adviser: Robert Mauck 

  • Ilenna Jones, Fontaine Fellow and PhD candidate in Neuroscience (PSOM)
    Adviser: Konrad Kording 

  • Jessica Schwarz, PhD candidate in Neuroscience (PSOM)
    Adviser: Amita Sehgal
