In May and June, Penn Career Services hosted two alum for a Q&A on applying for and working in an industry postdoc. Some graduate students may be considering this option since many companies in industry are still hiring even during the pandemic. Here are some take-aways for students considering an industry postdoc.
#1 – Start researching potential career options 1.5 to 2 years before you’re set to finish your degree. Look at job ads and pay attention to the skills they are looking for. This will give you an opportunity to build these skills.
#2 – Keep in mind that no one will have all the skills listed. Your interests should align with the position and you can show a willingness to learn what is necessary to fill in any gaps.
#3 – Industry postdocs keep set hours and are not expected to work or respond to calls outside of those hours.
#4 – Industry postdocs are still expected to publish.
#5 – Interviewing will most likely include phone interviews at the beginning and an all-day interview as you move further along in the process. All-day interviews usually involve meetings with specific scientists who are interested in your current research. Be ready to discuss your science in depth!
