Spring 2020 Technology Grants

All grant notifications will be sent by the end of April. If you do not receive a notification by May 1, please contact Meredith Wooten, Director of the Graduate Student Center.  

Please read and follow all directions in your grant notification carefully. Grants were approved to fund items that, in consultation with academic departments and graduate groups, were deemed essential to a student’s academic progress. Due to funding limitations, items that were not deemed essential were not approved for grants. Funding decisions are final with no exceptions. 

Please review the conditions below regarding the required documentation and uses of grant funds. 

Deadline: Monday, April 20 at 5 PM ET

GAPSA, Biomedical Graduate Student Association, Law Council of Student Representatives, Penn Dental Medicine Executive Student Council, SASgov, SP2 Student Government, Wharton Doctoral Council, and the Fontaine Society have agreed to deploy their unused travel grant and event funds to support technology expenses incurred by full-time graduate and professional students as a direct result of disruptions to the Spring 2020 semester.

Full-time graduate and professional students who demonstrate financial need may apply for grants (up to $500) related to technology needs (such as hardware and internet service)required to remotely conduct research, take courses, or teach courses during the Spring 2020 semester. Grants can be used to fund technology that is still needed or has already been purchased.

Please review information about IT Support and Software Access before making any new purchases or requesting funds for electronic resources, software, or storage.  

To be eligible, applicants must: 

  • Be a full time student currently registered in a Penn graduate or professional program and in good academic standing during both the fall and spring semesters of the current academic year. 

    • Students on leave this semester are not eligible

  • Be able to demonstrate financial need
  • Have incurred technology expenses as a direct result of disruptions to the Spring 2020 semester.

Review Process

  • If you are currently receiving student loans or financial aid, you may be evaluated by Student Financial Services (SFS) and considered for a loan to support any technology needs. The amount of your technology need will be added to your cost of attendance. Your eligibility for a grant in the amount of your loan (up to $500) will be reviewed by late April. Any grant funds you receive should be used to repay the loan that was disbursed to you to support your technology needs.

  • If you are not currently receiving student loans or financial aid, your request will be reviewed by Graduate Student Center / VPE staff. 

Grant Conditions 

  • Grants are not guaranteed. Grants are disbursed as funding allows, with priority given to the students who demonstrate the highest financial need.

  • Grants are awarded in amounts up to $500

  • Grant recipients will be notified in mid-to-late April. Grants will be disbursed on a rolling basis, while funds remain.

  • Grants may be taxable. You are responsible for reporting the grant income and paying applicable taxes. Depending on your tax status, taxes may be withheld prior to the grant disbursement.

  • Student receiving funds for new purchases may be asked to provide receipts within 30 days of grant notification. Failure to provide requested documentation will result in grant funds being rescinded. 

  • If you have falsified information or supporting documentation in your application, the grant funds will be rescinded, and you will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct. This extends to the use of grant funds for purposes other than those specified in your grant request and/or award notification. 

How to Apply

To apply, students must email sfsmail@pobox.upenn.edu with the subject line GRAD STUDENT TECHNOLOGY NEED before 5:00 PM ET on Monday, April 20.

In your email, you must provide the following: 

  • Your name

  • Your degree program

  • Description of your technology need resulting from Spring 2020 disruptions

  • Explanation of financial need

  • Any other steps you’ve taken to secure funding

  • Please attach receipts if already purchased.

  • Please provide an estimated cost if not already purchased.

Please provide as much detail as needed for reviewers to understand and evaluate your situation and needs.

Failure to follow instructions may delay processing or result in the denial of your request.
